Stir the pulp for better absorption of caustic solutions.

It is recommended that the above boiling procedure be repeated once again, however, shorten the boiling period to approximately thirty or forty minutes. This usually conquers the most stubborn material. Wash once more, then place the pulp into a glass, clay, or plastic storage jar, and seal with an appropriate lid until it is time to mix it into the vat. If left to rest on a shelf for a few days to a few weeks the contents will be further broken down by decomposition. This may, at times, be desirable. Pulp is wonderfully easy to work with when in this state, but attached to this condition is often a rather pronounced odor reminiscent of pond stagnation. If this is found to be unpleasant, add one teaspoon of household bleach to every two quarts of pulp and stir. This will eliminate much of the odor.

The bleach liquor may also lighten the color of the pulp but is injurious to the fibers by structurally weakening them. If you wish to purposefully lighten the natural color of the plant, experiment for best results. In any event, it is recommended that you not exceed four tablespoons of bleach per two quarts of dense pulp. The fiber will usually lighten within a few hours. Before using the pulp, thoroughly wash it and squeeze it with your hands to remove all traces of the bleach liquor.
